South End: Encompassing Some of the Most Beautiful Parks in the City
Hilly and heavily forested, Iroquois Park in the South End of Louisville offers a leafy respite from its urban surroundings and one of the city’s best views of downtown from the overlook at its summit. It is one of several Louisville parks that were designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
The manmade crown jewel of Iroquois Park is the Iroquois Amphitheater. Built in 1938, it was long the place to see and be seen in the South End while viewing plays and musicals, often featuring visiting big-name talent. A restoration and update completed in 2003 added more seating to the amphitheater (it can now accommodate 2,407 people) along with a partial roof; while you can still enjoy an open-air experience, you no longer have to worry about events being rained out.
